Maintaining good oral hygiene is paramount

Just like humans, our beloved pets require regular and consistent dental care – not only to prevent disease but also to ensure their teeth remain healthy and functional for as long as possible.

Dental disease is a prevalent health condition that affects many pets, with around 70% of cats and 80% of dogs experiencing some form of dental disease by the age of three.

Taking care of your pet's teeth is of utmost importance, as dental issues can cause significant pain, tooth and gum infections, inflammation, and even tooth and bone loss if left untreated.

Similar to humans, cats and dogs can suffer from dental conditions such as dental plaque, dental tartar, and gingivitis. Preventative dental care is crucial for companion animals to prevent these problems from worsening and affecting other parts of their bodies.

Fortunately, there are several things you can do at home to ensure your pet's dental health. The most effective measure is to brush their teeth regularly. Although it may sound daunting, most animals can get accustomed to having their teeth brushed with time and patience. Use pet toothpaste and a microfiber cloth designated solely for this purpose. Gently rub the toothpaste on every tooth, avoiding the use of human toothpaste, which can cause stomach issues for your pet.

It's best to introduce tooth brushing gradually, especially for older pets. Your veterinarian can provide specific advice tailored to your pet's needs.

Additionally, there are specialty dental diets, dental chews, toys, and even Chlorhexidine mouthwash or gel recommended by vets to help control plaque and tartar and reduce bacterial growth in the mouth.

While caring for your pet's dental health at home is essential, it's equally important to schedule regular veterinary check-ups. Your veterinarian should conduct a comprehensive dental examination during general health examinations, providing guidance on any necessary steps to take at home.

Your vet may recommend general anesthesia for a thorough dental examination, teeth cleaning, dental x-rays if needed, and other necessary procedures.

Remember, as responsible pet parents, your dedication to their dental care will ensure their overall well-being and longevity. Keep up the great work!
